Enter the measurements and product details, then calculate.

These tools estimate material quantities from dimensions you choose. They do not specify structural depth or load capacity.

Measure the area for this layer

Enter the length and width of each rectangular footprint that will receive sand, together with the depth chosen for that layer. Keep other materials, such as gravel below it, in their own lines. Two materials can cover the same footprint while needing different depths and purchasing units.

For several rectangles, record each area before adding the total. Do not include a border or an existing section unless it will receive sand. When levels vary, a single depth may not represent the whole space; use separate measured sections.

Turn area and depth into a volume

Convert the area and depth into compatible units, then multiply. Apply your chosen allowance to the net quantity once. The result is a volume; it is not automatically a weight.

Required volume = area × depth × (1 + allowance / 100).

Example: a measured bedding area

An illustrative 5 m by 4 m area has an area of 20 m². With a user-selected depth of 0.04 m, its net volume is 0.8 m³. A chosen 5% allowance gives 0.84 m³. These values demonstrate the calculation and do not specify a suitable bedding layer.

If the user enters 0.02 m³ of sand per bag, 42 bags supply 0.84 m³. If a supplier instead sells the material by mass, a density appropriate to that material and its stated condition is needed before estimating a mass.

Check what the supplier means

Ask whether the quoted quantity is a volume or a mass and whether the supplied specification matches the basis of your calculation. Enter a density only when it belongs to the material you intend to order. A value copied from another sand or from a gravel example is not verified for your purchase.

Keep the estimate within its scope

PackLedge does not choose sand type, grading, compaction, bedding thickness or a construction method. Store the selected product description and your assumptions with the project so a quantity is not separated from the information that made it meaningful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate sand without a density?

Yes. Area and depth are enough for volume. Weight remains unavailable until you supply a suitable density.

Can I reuse the gravel line for sand?

Use a separate sand line. Its depth, density, package specification and purchase unit may differ even when the footprint is identical.
