Calculation method
From Tile Area to Pieces and Boxes
Piece rounding and box rounding represent two different purchasing constraints.

Calculate the required coverage
Start with the net surface area that will receive tile. Deduct measured uncovered sections once, then apply the allowance you choose. The result is an adjusted target area, not yet a package count.
The dimensions and allowance are project inputs. The method does not prescribe a universal waste percentage or infer the layout from a room name.
Use the face area of one tile
Multiply tile width by tile height in compatible units. Divide the adjusted target area by that face area and round up to a whole piece. This is the minimum whole-piece count under the area model.
The calculation does not lay out grout lines, orientation or cuts. It treats tile face coverage as an area measure, so it should not be mistaken for a proof that a particular fitting pattern is possible.
Convert whole pieces to complete boxes
Divide the minimum pieces by the number in one selected box and round up again. Multiplying boxes by pieces per box gives the actual supplied piece count. Multiplying supplied pieces by face area gives purchased coverage.
Example with two rounding stages
A net area of 10 m² with a chosen 10% allowance becomes 11 m². A 0.3 m square tile has a face area of 0.09 m². The quotient is 122.222… pieces, so the minimum is 123.
At 12 pieces per box, 123 pieces require 11 boxes. The purchase supplies 132 tiles with 11.88 m² of face area. Purchase surplus beyond the adjusted requirement is 0.88 m², while the selected allowance itself was 1 m².
| Stage | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Net coverage | 10 m² |
| After chosen allowance | 11 m² |
| Whole-piece minimum | 123 pieces |
| Whole-box purchase | 11 boxes / 132 pieces |
| Purchased face coverage | 11.88 m² |
Aggregate only compatible specifications
For one shared purchase, combine unrounded adjusted areas using the same tile and box specification before the final package calculation. Preserve the source areas so they remain editable. Different tile formats or box counts must remain distinguishable.
The result still needs a separate layout review. Unused face area is not a guarantee of usable offcuts in the shapes your project requires.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the piece count and show only boxes?
The purchase can be expressed in boxes, but showing the intermediate piece count makes the estimate easier to audit and explains the supplied quantity.
