Metric Tonnes and US Short Tons in Material Orders
The word ton is not enough information for a material order.

Ask which mass unit the quote uses
A supplier’s quantity needs an explicit unit. A metric tonne and a US short ton are different masses. If a quote says only tons, confirm the intended unit before comparing it with a calculator result or another offer.
Do not infer the unit solely from a currency symbol or a familiar abbreviation. Retain the confirmed label in the project and in any exported list.
Keep the conversion basis clear
A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, equal to 907.18474 kg using the exact pound definition. PackLedge labels those choices separately.
A printed reference may show a rounded factor for readability. That displayed approximation should not become an intermediate value repeatedly used in calculations. Use a defined conversion once and format the result for the reader.
The same mass can have two different numbers
An illustrative mass of 3,520 kg is 3.52 metric tonnes. It is approximately 3.880 US short tons. The material has not changed; only the unit used to express its mass has changed.
A list that rounds both figures and labels them simply tons makes it harder to check the order. Keep the full unit description where a reader chooses or compares a purchasing quantity.
A volume still needs density before it becomes mass
Knowing the ton convention does not solve a volume-to-weight conversion on its own. A gravel estimate in cubic metres also needs a density applicable to the selected material and quantity basis.
If density is missing, retain the volume and ask the supplier what information is needed. Do not assume one cubic metre is one metric tonne or one short ton just because that produces a convenient number.
Use a short unit check before ordering
Compare the calculator, product information and supplier quote line by line.
- Is the quantity a volume or a mass?
- If it is a mass, which exact unit is used?
- If converted from volume, where did the density come from?
- Does the export retain the selected unit label?
- Does any unit price apply to that same purchasing unit?
Preserve the original information
Keep the source quantity and unit with the converted result. That gives you a way to revisit the calculation if a supplier clarifies the quote. A conversion changes the representation; it does not verify the material or supplier terms.

The article’s introduction states the exact avoirdupois-pound definition: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Multiplying that exact definition by 2,000 gives the 907.18474 kg US short-ton conversion used here.
