Paint Quantities for a Whole-Home Project

Keep the detail of each room while preparing a larger paint order.

Enter the measurements and product details, then calculate.

These tools estimate material quantities from dimensions you choose. They do not specify structural depth or load capacity.

Measure rooms independently

Create one record per rectangular room. Enter its dimensions, selected walls or ceiling, measured wall openings, coat count and coverage. The current room model selects all four walls and/or the complete rectangular ceiling. A whole-home estimate should not begin with a single floor-area multiplier that hides wall heights and product differences.

Use clear room names and keep wall and ceiling products distinct where necessary. Check that a hallway, alcove or connecting room has not been counted twice.

Example: three wall areas

Consider net wall areas of 32 m², 27 m² and 20 m². These could be a bedroom, office and hallway after their individual openings have been deducted. Together they contain 79 m² of net wall area.

If all three use the same specified product, two user-selected coats and illustrative coverage of 10 m²/L, the requirement before allowance is 15.8 L. A chosen 10% allowance gives 17.38 L.

(32 + 27 + 20) × 2 / 10 × 1.10 = 17.38 L.

Round the shared purchase once

With a 2.5 L can, seven cans supply 17.5 L. The surplus beyond the adjusted requirement is 0.12 L. Keep the unrounded room requirements until grouping; separately rounded room cans can create a different order.

When a room uses another product, coverage or package specification, retain a separate purchase group. Do not force a match by changing a label while leaving the underlying parameters different.

Check one room at a time

Review each room’s opening deductions and surface selections before looking at the house total. An impossible opening area should be corrected locally. The final list should retain enough detail to trace every purchase group back to its rooms.

Coverage, coats and allowance remain project inputs. This method does not assess finish suitability or promise a result from a specific application technique.

Frequently asked questions

Can rooms with different products share one can total?

No. Keep different products and incompatible purchasing parameters in separate groups, even when all results use litres.
